Little Lion Research and GC Insight were commissioned by the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub to undertake research in collaboration with the Office for Clean Energy Jobs (OCEJ) within DESNZ to build a regional picture of clean energy skills and jobs which supported the net zero ambition established in the Clean Energy Jobs Plan.
Our Role:
Through the project, we:
- Identified clean energy workforce data sources, collection frameworks, and analytical frameworks
- Engaged a wide range of stakeholders in the research including combined authorities, employer intermediaries and major investors across the region
- Developed case studies of major clean energy investment from across the region
- Determined which of the study’s Key Research Questions the existing evidence answered, including what clean energy workforce data CA’s hold and use; what priority occupations in clean energy sectors are expected to be in demand; what discrepancies and gaps exist between national and regional data on clean energy workforce forecasts; what are the causes of these discrepancies; and which clean energy sectors and projects will drive job creation in each region
- We concluded by identifying where new work or data collection was required and recommended how to address the issues to support workforce planning and delivery
Outcome:
The Net Zero Hub and Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) used the study to support decision making, including to:
- clarify where future workforce demand is likely to be concentrate
- identify priority sectors and occupations for investment and to support workforce planning and delivery of the Clean Energy Jobs Plan
- improve understanding of how clean energy jobs are defined and measured
- inform the development of future education, training and business support programmes
Client Testimonial:
"Working with Little Lion Research and GC Insight was a real pleasure. They took real ownership of the work, progressing it confidently and coherently. Their findings were clear, logical, and well presented, and they consistently went above and beyond — leading steering groups, attending Office for Clean Energy Jobs working groups, and remaining flexible with the specification as priorities shifted. I found them an absolute delight to work with and would highly recommend them."
