Mid-term evaluation of the Smart Sustainable Plastics Packaging (SSPP) Challenge

  • Client: UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

We were commissioned to complete an independent, mid-term process and impact evaluation of UKRI’s smart sustainable plastic packaging (SSPP) challenge, a £60 million five-year programme.

The purpose of the challenge – one of 23 being delivered under the UKRI Challenge Fund – is to support bold, ambitious, large-scale innovations to bring about wholescale changes that improve sustainability in the UK plastic packaging industry.

Our role included a review of existing evidence, and a programme of data collection with applicants, programme management and wider stakeholders.

The evaluation helped UKRI to understand the progress made so far, provided recommendations for future challenges and suggested ways to improve the final impact evaluation.
